2011 Christmas Wishlist
Just in case anyone's interested :)
Aside from #10, I know I basically asked for material stuff. So for non-material things, here's my list:
Asics Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 Black. For the longest time I've been dreaming of owning an Onitsuka pair.
Gerber’s Bear Grylls Survival Series. I'm a huge Bear Grylls fan nevermind the "staged" situations :))
Lego Planner. Because I'm a huge Lego fan.
Collection!
Issues #1-5 have two stories, one written by Stephen King!
Intrigued just because Evanna Lynch (who portrayed Luna Lovegood in the HP films) kept raving about it (plus the cool ads haha).
Cambridge satchel bags are terribly expensive so I'd settled for a Cole Vintage instead :)
To complete my A Song of Fire and Ice book series. Second hand book'll do!
As a kid I wanted this. As an adult, I still want it. Still can't afford it :|
Another championship title for Boston. It's a long shot but heyyy, you'll never know :))
If you're outside the Philippines, please send me one! I'll PM you my address :)
Socks. The staple of my every (birthday or) Christmas wishlist.
- Happiness and peace of mind for Mo Twister. You can add KC Concepcion too.
- For the rumored Coldplay or Radiohead's concert to push thru here in MNL.
Super advance: For Barca to win in this coming El Clasico! :D- To borrow from my officemate's wish, JUSTICE FOR RAMGEN!
- No fare hike.
- For Chantel and I's dreamed indie film set in Sorsogon to push thru. Certainly it won't be about whale sharks nor popular tourist spots.
- NAIA rehabilitation plan to push thru ASAP.
- Fire-free Christmas and New Year.
- Full land distribution for Hacienda Luisita farmers.
- Justice for Maguindanao massacre victims.
- To not rain on Christmas.
- World peace.

It's that time of the year once again. Time to revisit the film that gives me, and I'm sure a lot more other, that warm fuzzy feeling deep into the pits of our stomach.

Hong Kong Disneyland
If Disneyland and Hong Kong weren't too expensive, I'd definitely be here at least once a month. One day is NOT and NEVER enough!
I wish to come back soon. Or maybe I'll take Shanghai Disneyland instead when it opens and if I got the $$$.

New Hunger Games Trailer
I'm not a super fan of The Hunger Games Trilogy (I like the plot though - something new, different and exciting - and Peeta and Haymitch!) but I like keeping track of the film adaptation of the novel. I didn't set my expectations high, except for Haymitch's character (I approve of casting Woody Harrelson as Katniss and Peeta's mentor), so it was pretty awesome watching the second trailer (after the first crappy and horrendous trailer/teaser of course). It more than made up for its first (again, crappy) trailer/teaser that I am actually excited to see it come March 2012.
PS:
Jennifer Lawrence aka Katniss Everdeen was really pretty in the Reaping scene. I hope Josh Hutchinson aka Peeta Mellark does not disappoint us all :D

Di Ingon 'Nato (Not Like Us)
Watch and give this film a chance. I know, everyone's gonna compare it to American zombie films and series i.e, The Walking Dead, but let's just say that this is the Pinoy and barrio version at that of a zombie film.
Also before you lash out with all your criticism with the film, keep in mind that this movie has waaaay low budget than its western counterparts and besides, I think it was, if not the first, one of the films to foray into the "zombie" genre. I'm sure many will follow the footsteps of directors Brandon Relucio and Ivan Zaldarriaga.

Milky & Sunny: Breakfast All Day Long
There's a new food place in our beloved Kapitolyo neighborhood called:
From the menu I figured that Milky & Sunny serves breakfast all day, everyday! So if you're craving for some waffles, silog meals or French toasts, this is definitely your place.
These are photos from my phone hence the poor quality but I"ll surely come back to try their other specials, maybe by then I can have some decent shots.
As I was walking out, one of the owners approached and introduced herself to me which was really cool. And like I promised her, I'll definitely bring my friends and officemates here next time.
By the way, this is what I bought: Banana Kingkong French Toast. I think it's better if I ate it there on the spot, see the presentation totally got lost on the takeout box haha. Til next time Milky & Sunny!

Razia Khan: Remember one thing, son. There are only two kinds of people in this world. Good people who do good deeds. And bad people who do bad. That's the only difference in human beings. There's no other difference. Understood? What did you understand? Tell me. Tell me.

The Walking Dead Season 2 Premiere
I already forgot how long everybody, including me, has to wait for The Walking Dead's second season premier. It was that looong. But boy was it worth it? Oye.
Although when did hiding under the car made the zombie ignore the smell of human flesh? Labo. Also, season 2 premiere ep's ending wasn't the ending I expected. I'm sure it wasn't the sign Rick Grimes asked for. Oh well. Can't wait for second episode (it showed new people/characters!).

The Vampire Diaries - The Reckoning episode
The Vampire Diaries' The Reckoning episode for me was the best episode of the season so far. Indeed, too many life changing incidents happened. So much information being thrown, albeit. inconspicuously.
Mikael o Mikael. I wonder what sort of trouble/information/joy will you bring to Mystic Falls this time?
After 3 seasons, I'll finally admit it out loud: TEAM DELENA!
Sorry Stefan, despite trying hard to be a badass this season, I still don't like you. You are really boring :( Damon already has the crown for that.

Oh yeah. Finally, the vampire and the werewolf admitted their feelings to one another. I love that scene heehee. And of course, the sappy (one way) telephone conversation between Stefan and Elena at the end of the first episode, don't tell me your heart wasn't moved by that scene, uh-uh.

Canon S100 or SX40
There is a new Canon baby in town! Seriously, I'm rethinking my future G12 purchase because of the just released S100. According to Digital Photography's Review:
The S100 is in effect a whole new camera compared to the S95; almost every key feature has been upgraded or updated:
Frankly, I don't care about the built-in GPS tracker but I do care about its high sensitivity' CMOS sensor in the 1/1.7" format. This feature allowed Canon to increased s100's ISO to 6400! Wow lang.
- 24-120mm (equivalent) lens range, F2.0-5.9, built-in neutral density filter
- 12.1 MP 1/1.7" Canon CMOS sensor
- DIGIC 5 image processor
- ISO 80-6400
- 2.3 fps continuous shooting (9.6 fps for 8 frames in High-Speed burst mode)
- Full HD (1080p24) movie recording; H.264 compression, MOV format
- Optical zoom in movie mode
- Super slow motion movie recording (640 x 480 @ 120fps, 320 x 340 @ 240 fps)
- Direct movie record button
- Built-in GPS unit with image tagging and logger functions
On the other hand, this baby also looks smashing!
I've read (and been told) that the SX series' optical zooming capabilities are also pretty impressive. In addition to that, its low light performance are decent too, kinda like that of S95 (which is not bad at all)! However, what sold the SX40 to me, aside from the 35x Optical Zoom) was its 24mm ultra Wide-Angle lens. O di ba ang bongga!
G12 has officially been ousted as the replacement for my 3-1/3-year-old Canon Ixy point and shoot. I never wanted those fancy schmancy DSLRs so I'm quite happy that Canon released these 2 new digital compact cameras. The only problem now is what exactly to choose. But first, must make a pros and cons list.

So, that's what we saw at the rooftop of the Philippines. Lots of fog. Joke! Well, aside from that, God granted us all a nice clearing albeit for a very limited time only. You can see Davao City below, the Mt. Talomo peak on the otherside and of course, the always majestic sea of clouds.

Jamie and His Food Revolution
This guy here is my new man. I love how he intensely promotes the healthy habit of eating, reforming school lunches in his native country and then going across the pond to US to further instill his cause. I love how he literally cries when children don't know their vegetables. One of my favorite scenes in his Food Revolution episodes was his flabbergasted look upon finding out that American kids are not taught to use their cutleries at age 5-6. Apparently, British kids are taught as early as possible how to use their forks and knives.
Before Food Revolution he had his Jamie's School Dinners show that lobbied hard for a change of school dinners (or lunches on our side of pond) in British schools. It was a massive success of eliminating junk food on every school's dinner plates, with the UK government acknowledging and supporting the need for change.
America, on the other hand, was a different story. There was a lot of resistance and annoying resurgence of old habits that it was a bit hard to actually root for them. I wonder if they're still engaging with their "healthy" food habit.
As for me, what have changed? Well, you won't catch me chomping on those chicken nuggets again!

What will you see?
It dazzles me what afterlife would be. Where would I be? What would I see. what would I hear, will I find it to my liking or will it be what my religion has taught me it would be?
But in the grand scheme of things, whatever may be waiting for me, for us, in the beyond life, I hope the life that would flash in my very eyes are those memories that I so worked hard to be fulfilled. I wish to see a happy life being flashed at me and not images of a brassed off girl, silently wringing her hair while staring at her office monitor.

No I Am Not
An officemate and I have quite a thing for everything "hipster" that most of the time we make fun of how we can't tell if someone's a hipster, what makes a hipster and why are they hipster. Sometimes we tease by calling each other "hipsters" (according to the numerous lists of "signs that you are a hipster"). But at the end of every bantering we always, always deny that we are simply because we're not!
I am not a hipster. Although I am very much guilty of uttering the“I liked them before they were mainstream” line, fancying indie-rock music and for owning a bike, I'm not. Jeezus how many people owns a bike, listens to indie-rock and states the same line!?
I don't smoke, I don't wear plaid, don't wear glasses with no lenses (which is stupid in my opinion), I'm not an intellectual nor do I reject everything mainstream! The "hipsters" are in Cubao if you're looking for one. Hee.
After watching the video above I therefore concluded that I am not a hipster because 1) I am not wealthy and 2) I am not smelly LOL. *peace*
PS: This piece is very entertaining and informative at the same time, please do not take it seriously.

But of course, kinilig talaga ako at the end of the Learn video. If you know me and my obsession with Machu Picchu you'd understand :D
I love these boys. Yes, I envy them for the places they've been, the food that they've tasted and the things that they've learned. How many people can do all of those things, right? But I especially respect them for taking the time to learn a thing or two, soaking themselves in the place's culture. Not many travelers/tourists can do that I tell you. So now it got me thinking why didn't we do that when we had our SEA backpacking last year? Anyway, I'll think of something for this year's impending travel.
At sige na nga, plus points na rin na cute silang lahat haha.

The Kobe Bryant Experience
I was just waiting for JC at Powerbooks so we can get home together, what followed was a series of fortunate events. When he arrived at Powerbooks he immediately told me about all the mall security lining up outside as if someone very important was coming, so mega usisa naman kami kung the who ang VIP na yon. Nasa cinema ang kaguluhan and from the people milling around we overheard that it was Kobe Bryant. I did not believe at first cos I thought he wasn't here (that time) yet but then after running towards the escalator going up cinema 3, we got a confirmation from this (lucky) lady and her son who got a photo of Kobe on her iPhone!
HOMG!
I'm not a fan of Kobe pero walangya Kobe Bryant is the Kobe Bryant! Ilang tao lang ba ang nabibiyaan ng pagkakataon to be at the same place with him? Uhmm, hindi ko rin alam basta alam ko lahat kami na nasa Shangri-la nung gabing yun e maswerte.
He (and his entourage) was at Cinema 3 watching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 (stalker mode on!) and with a quick calculation estimated that he'll be out at around 12.30am. Should we wait for 2 and a half hours to see him? Will we see him naman kaya talaga!? The Cheese was ok with it and I was quite thankful that I brought my laptop with me so he can watch the 2 remaining GoT episodes he hasn't watched yet (and keep him busy too). At saan pa ba tatambay kundi sa Starbucks! I'm not a Starbucks or coffee person but that time it seemed to be our best option to pass up the time.
In fairness, nakakakaba maghintay kay Kobe cos all these ugly thoughts kept on creeping up in my head. What if umalis sya ng maaga? What if sa ibang daan sya dumaan? What if di kami palapitin? Aba it would really suck big time cos we waited two and a half hours ha.
Starbucks closes at 12, so we hung out in the snacks area for a while until the guard also whisked us away. But we, along with the crew of Claw Daddy, Sumo Sam, cinemas, etc remained inside. Pakalat kalat lang kami while nervously waiting for 12.30 to roll.
Ang pinakamalungkot na narinig ko nang gabing yun "bawal mag-picture". Sabi yan ni kuya guard. Masunurin ako so, wala talagang picture. Ayokong madyaryo as pasaway no!
Around 12.15 bumababa na sila sa escalator my gaaad takbuhan ang ganap. Sad to say manong guard didn't even let us come near them. ANG LAYO NA NILA, NAG-ELEVATOR PA! Kamote.
Yun na ang pinakamabilis na pagbaba ko ng escalator/hagdan from sixth floor just to catch him on level 1. At mabait si Lord kasi naabutan namin sya, saktong palabas pa lang ng elev. Again, manong guard told us not to take photos so I didn't.
Then they all suddenly stopped in front of NBS. I dunno who he was but this guy (from Kobe's entourage) ran up to a Pinoy guy and was fussing at his camera. Deleting photos? Wow pare heavy. MEHGANONG GANAP.
But man whoever you are I thank you cos if not for you they wouldn't be standing there for about what? 2 minutes?
KOBE BRYANT, so near yet so far. I was grinning like mad and Kobe was like ___. Dedma lang. Poker face forever!
And when they finally moved towards the gate, JC and I were following behind them, 2 or 3 feet man that's how close we got to him. JC and I felt like we were part of his entourage sa sobrang close hahaha.
Ang tumambad samin palabas? Sandamakmak na mobile phones and cameras aimed at him. Dang, sana pala sa labas na lang kami naghintay talaga at least dun pwede mag-picture haha.
On the other hand, okay lang din. At least nakita pa rin namin sya. We may not have the photos to prove it pero malaki ang chance na kasama kami sa picture na kinuha nyo kay Kobe lol. It was only outside where I finally remembered to take a video of him. Sorry likod lang nya ang kita pero promise sya talaga yan!
Ladies and gentleman, I present you Kobe's back. Erm, back of Kobe's head lang pala pambihira:

A Dance With Dragons
The fifth installment in A Song of Ice and Fire series comes out today. I'm sure a lot of people have their copies now in their desk, bed or their hands, about to pee with excitement once again with the most awaited return of the characters from Westeros. I'm not sure when I can lay my own hands with one, I'll probably have to wait out for the paperback edition first because I'm nearly broke already :|
Enjoy! Gaad I hope I won't stumble in to any spoiler site. I've read enough spoilers to kick myself in the arse and get on with finishing all 4 books, which unfortunately I haven't completed yet haha.

Game of Thrones
Fell down the wonderful world of Westeros and never got out. I swear the whole series (10 episodes of them) were all brilliantly and amazingly made it pains my heart everytime I finish watching an episode, and so much more when the season ended.
Lesson learned: Don't get too attached with any of the character/s, you might not forgive the author for killing them off hee (though I've found out that that's really his style).
My favorite characters in GoT:
Eddard Stark (Sean Bean). Yes, he seems to have steered in the general direction of kingly, honourable character. Not that it's bad.
"In the name of Robert of the house Baratheon, first of his name, king of the Andals and the first men, lord of the seven kingdoms and protector of the realm, I Eddard of the House Stark, Lord of Winterfell, and warden of the North, sentence you to die."
Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage). He delivers all the killer lines! What he lacks in height he makes up with wit, smart and too often, snarky remarks.
Jon Snow (Kit Harington). There's just something about Ned's bastard's eyes that haunts me. Those sad, sad eyes. Plus, I'll always root for the underdogs.
Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) Such a brave young girl so unlike her despicable sister. Strong character! I also like her relationship with her father, Ned. Too bad, huhu.
The direwolves. All of them, at least the remaining ones. They're fiercely loyal!
Now I'm off to read GoT, the first of the seven-book series A Song of Fire and Ice. Best of luck!

No, I haven't thought of my own wedding yet. This is a topic that I honestly haven't given any attention yet since I'm sure I won't be marrying til I'm in my 30s. So naturally why would I think of what songs to be played on that day right?! But this 30-day song challenge made me think and to be fair, I looked for one that is considered proper to be played on a wedding.
This song is actually good so try and listen to it :)

This is also my most favorite song from the whole album. I've loved this song the most even though Burnout came out first (and technically the most loved), even though Telepono was the first single I heard the band sang (in UP Fair). Perhaps because it was the perfect song that hit home, the first song that was actually able to describe how I felt during those heydays haha.
PS: it doesn't only really refer to romantic shiz. Come on, we can all do better analysis here ;)

day 18 - A Song That You Wish You Heard On The Radio
I love Jack's Mannequin. This band makes me happy with the kind of music that they make, and vocalist Andrew McMahon's personal story? It is quite moving and inspiring to say none the least. I would have love to put the music video here but embedding wasn't allowed so here's another gem I found in cyberspace instead.

day 17 - A Song That You Hear Often On The Radio
I rarely get to listen to radio the past few months. I only get updated of what's the current music craze when I ride the public bus which isn't really the face of the radio community but it'll do.

Day 16 - A Song That You Used To Love But Now Hate
Don't get me wrong, hate is such a strong word maybe the right word should be "outgrew". I still like Linkin Park, I still get a kick rapping the lyrics to In The End, but this song, I can forego this :)

Somehow, I really could relate to this song. No, I'm not a superstar, I never had any intention to be one anyway.

Day 14 - A Song That No One Would Expect You To Love
Today was the first time I heard of this song. I was watching the last few minutes of Kylie's Showgirl concert in Star World when she sang this song, and I liked it haha. And also, for the first time, I truly appreciated Kylie's talent and how she is indeed comparable to a wine, just keeps getting better in time!

Day 13 - A Song That Is A Guilty Pleasure
Here is that song that whenever I hear, and that's quite rare, is such a guilty pleasure. I don't care if it's a teleserye OST since the song rocks naman talaga :)

Day 10 - A Song That Makes You Fall Asleep
Actually, almost - if not all - of Jack Johnson's song are great lullabies. But this one's my favorite, hearing this soothes and irons out stress :)

Day 07 - A Song That Reminds You Of A Certain Event
It wasn't a momentous event of my life nevertheless I regard it as an experience that somewhat belongs to Mariela-poorita-bordering-on-desperada days. I was looking for a job, landed one and then have to leave after the first day of training because they thought I have something wrong with my lungs. For some time I, too, believed it. Then fear crept out on my fragile mind thinking "what if it's true?" I was running to and from various hospitals and clinics looking for someone to clear my lung record.
You know what makes that day super frustrating to the point I was leaving a trail of tears all over the metro? It was my birthday eve. I was riding a bus then suddenly tears will just fall down my eyes no joke. I swear it was the perfect moment where I can claim nakakaawa naman ako. I was such an emo haha.
But I persisted, and most of all, He heard me. All the prayers and bargaining paid off.
PS:
I don't think I got a lung problem. At least according to my recent medical result. Screw that clinic for scaring the shit out of this wan girl!

Day 06 - A Song That Reminds You Of Somewhere
"When you're in the golden sea, you don't need no memory..."
This song always remind me of the beach. A vacation. Tan lines. Fruit juices. Lounging around. Of carefree days when you're away where your biggest problem is what food to choose for lunch in wherever your happy place might be.

2 of my inaanak, Kai Mykonos' (or Noskai/Noskie Woskie as I fondly call her) facial expression. Super kyot at 2 months! Here she is with his Tito JC when we visited her and Kimi in Baguio a few weeks ago.

Nine Days - If I Am
Nine Days, in fairness, is not a one-hit wonder band, they are 2-hit wonder band kasi! But seriously, I loved these guys back when I was college and whenever I hear their song in the radio (pag Friday classics) I immediately think of my friend Jog who introduced me to them.
I remember going crazy for this band I practically begged him to give me his The Madding Crowd cd when he left our boarding house. At yung cd ha hindi naman orig (sorry!) at puro na gasgas but I treasured it so much up until di na kinaya ng tenga ko ang pagtalon-talon nya haha.

Baby (Multidrink) Nalgene
Technically my 3rd Nalgene but I lost my very first bottle (a gift from my friend Kimi) after leaving it on a trike (which I never got back from the driver sniff). My second bottle was given to me by the Cheese as a replacement to the one I've lost. And this new baby here given by my friend Pam as a belated birthday gift via coercion haha.
I love Nalgene! It's a must have kit whenever I'm outdoors or on out of towns. I wish I could buy one in every design (and color too) but they're so expensive gosh. But the quality naman aysus, winner!

Day 04 - A Song That Makes You Sad
While the overall theme of this song might sound too glum, it actually is the opposite. Even though this song makes me sad and ache somewhere deep in the recesses of my heart (naks mehganon!), it however provides hope to anyone who would actually know the lyrics (and the story behind) of the song. Besides, don't we all want someone who will sing us the lines "kapit ka sa akin at hindi kita pababayaan..."?

Super 8
Super 8 reminded me so much of The Goonies, a 1985 film also produced by Spielberg.
And this 1986, Rob Reiner film (based on Stephen King's novella, The Body).
Did you see the common factor?
You got it right. Friends and adventures. I actually fell in love with the kids of Super 8, for me they're the real scene stealers. Aside from the "thing" that we're rooting for to live ( I won't spoil it for you if you haven't seen it yet). Is that a first? I'm not sure but I think no.
I love the film's vintage effect and of course, a Spielberg movie is never without it: bicycles.

Day 03 - A Song That Makes You Happy
The funky beat, the slight hint of Alex Turner's British accent, makes it a happy song for me.

Day 02 - Your Least Favorite Song
Scratch that, I love this song. I'm not sure what "least favorite" song meant. So I assumed it's still a song you really like but not say, in your top 10? I dunno, confusing talaga!
Regardless, here it is as how it appeared in that 90s movie we all loved.

Day 01 - Your Favorite Song
Seriously, it's too hard to choose just one favorite song. But in order to come up with one, I chose something that goes all the way back to high school. I was fourteen when I got introduced to (alternative) rock scene. I live in a far off province, in a way, everything came late to me. Except for Hanson, which is another story.
